Shostakovich Favourites

The program of music by Dmitri Shostakovich prepared by The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera includes little known or rarely performed works by the composer made in different genres.

The program opens with “The Gamblers”, the unfinished opera which Shostakovich was writing in 1942, in the evacuation during WWII. The play, directed by Yuri Alexandrov, combines the Gogol plot with the voice of the composer himself, his music and the letters that he wrote to his family from Samara (then called Kuibyshev). Combining numerous dramatic layers and intertwining of tragic and comic scenes is what forms semantic diversity of this extraordinary production.
Vocal music of Dmitri Shostakovich is presented with the stage version of the cycle “From Jewish Folk Poetry”. Eleven parts of the cycle are not linked by the plot but united by the strong approach of director Tatyana Karpacheva and the scenography based on the paintings by Marc Chagall.
The evening will be concluded with the performance of the most outstanding pieces of “The Golden Age” suite.
