The premiere of the opera “Vampire” by G. Marschner took place at the St. Petersburg Opera

25
December
On the stage of the St. Petersburg Opera Theater on December 23 and 24, the premiere performances of the opera “Vampire” by Heinrich Marschner, staged by People’s Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov, took place.

Also working on the performance:
— conductor-producer — Maxim Valkov;
— production designer - People's Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Okunev;
— choirmaster — Igor Pototsky;
— choreographer — Vasil Panayotov;
— lighting designer — Azat Yulbarisov;
— video art — Georgy Savelyev;
— directors — Daria Modzalevskaya, Yulia Rogulina;
— responsible accompanist — laureate of international competitions Olga Mityokina.

“The opera Vampire is very rarely staged on European stages, not because it is not known, but because this work requires a lot of work and the presence of first-class vocalists and an orchestra. We have no problems with this, because at the helm is Maxim Valkov, a very interesting, young and energetic musician, whom I call a real theater conductor. The opera has large crowd scenes with the participation of the choir. I believe in my choir because they have proven that they can not only sing - they can dance, they can perform pantomime, they are real musical artists. Our team is very interesting. The artist is People's Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Okunev, with whom I constantly work. Together we came up with a very interesting platform, difficult for the artists, but very effective for arranging the characters, especially in the conditions of our small stage. We needed to come up with a special scenography, thanks to which crowd scenes would be read in a chamber space,” said artistic director and founder of the St. Petersburg Opera, People’s Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov.

The opera "Vampire" is a German romantic opera imbued with Gothic motifs. Wilhelm August Wohlbrück wrote the libretto based on the play The Vampire (1821) by Heinrich Ludwig Ritter. The premiere of the opera "Vampire" took place on March 29, 1828 at the Leipzig city theater. It was attended by Richard Wagner, who was inspired by The Vampire when working on The Flying Dutchman. The first performance in Russia took place in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theater on December 3, 1831 under the title “The Vampire, or the Bloodsucker Dead.”

According to the plot, during the Sabbath of evil spirits, the Lord of Darkness sets a condition for the vampire Lord Ruthven that if he does not sacrifice three innocent girls within 24 hours, he will die. The first victim of the monster is Zhante. The girl's father discovers her body in a cave next to the vampire and manages to wound him. Lord Ruthven is found by a certain Edgar Aubrey and carries the vampire into the moonlight, which saves his life. In the morning, Aubrey learns that his beloved Malvina Davenaut is to marry a certain Earl Marsden. Seeing the Count, Aubrey recognizes him as Ruthven, but cannot reveal the secret, since Ruthven took an oath from him not to reveal his true identity. If the secret is revealed within the next 24 hours, Aubrey will also become a vampire. Ruthven seduces Emmy, the fiancée of Georg, an employee in Davenauth's house. After this, he returns to his own wedding. Aubrey decides to reveal the Vampire's secret, no matter the consequences. However, when the clock strikes the hour, the oath expires and Aubrey betrays Ruthven. The vampire falls into hell. Malvina's father gives permission for his daughter and Aubrey to marry.

For the premiere, a series of VK Clips was released in the VKontakte theater community https://vk.com/spbopera, which allows users of the social network to learn the history of the opera and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the performance.
