The Tour of the St. Petersburg Opera in Dubai

The St. Petersburg Opera company will perform on one of the most famous venues in the Arab world – Dubai Opera on October 11 and 12, 2021 with G. Verdi’s “Rigoletto” staged by People’s Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov.
Dubai Opera is the main cultural center of the emirate, where the best theatrical and opera productions take place. Legendary artists such as Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Anna Maria Martinez performed here. The capacity of the concert hall can welcome up to 2000 spectators.
“I am sure that Rigoletto will be a great success, the hall will be full. For the first time, the performers will come here within the framework of bilateral cooperation between Dubai Opera and the collective from the Northern capital of Russia, moreover, with a full-fledged production. The visit of the St. Petersburg Opera is a serious contribution to the promotion of the culture of Russia, which is our property, the heritage of our country,” said Yuri Vidakas, Charge d'affaires of Russia in the UAE.
“Rigoletto is one of the most famous works of Giuseppe Verdi. The production boldly shatters the opera clichés that have developed in the process of staging Rigoletto. According to Yuri Alexandrov, the court jester is not a hunchback, but a sarcastic, intelligent, and wicked, but not at all an old man. The hump and the mask are merely the buffoonish guises he wears at the Duke's court. However, moral ugliness cannot be shed like a mask. An extraordinary man, forced to endure constant humiliation, he entertains intrigue, willingly taking part in the amusement of his master and his entourage.
This project is implemented with the organizational support of the Government of St. Petersburg and the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation within the framework of agreements concluded between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Emirate of Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
The performances of the opera company are included in the cultural program of the Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020.
“We are very pleased that the St. Petersburg Opera is a part of the cultural program of the Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai, which will show one of the most famous Verdi's operas, Rigoletto. The Russian school of opera is considered one of the best in the world. We are delighted that one of the best opera houses in St. Petersburg will prove it to the world when nations gather together from October 2021 to March 2022 in Dubai, because 191 countries will take part at Expo 2020. And I am sure that many of the exhibitors and guests of the exhibition will be at the Dubai Opera on October 11-12,” said Alexander Getman, Director of the Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020.
