Hungary is a new tour destination for the St. Petersburg Opera
At the end of March 2020, the St. Petersburg Chamber Opera opens a new touring direction. The collective will perform on the new stage of the Hungarian State Opera - Eiffel Art Studios. The theatre will bring two unique performances staged by Yuri Alexandrov. The opera “Les pêcheurs de perles” by Georges Bizet will be shown on March 28, and the play “Faust” by Charles Gounod will be presented to the audience on March 29, 2020.
Bizet's early opera is a work with a difficult fate, and, unlike the often-performed famous “Carmen”, it rarely appears on opera scenes in the world. “Les pêcheurs de perles” is captivated with dramatic expressiveness, poetic beauty of music and oriental spiciness of sound. The traditional plot is a classic love triangle. Yuri Alexandrov and artist Vyacheslav Okunev created a fairytale for adults, which is full of melodies and magical atmosphere of the east. The performance amazes the audience with colorful costumes and sets.
The production of “Faust” is completely opposite in atmosphere and artistic decisions. In a modern expressive performance, Alexandrov raises eternal philosophical problems, reflects on the nature of love and the opposition of hell to heaven. This production has become one of the most piercing works of the director with an intrigued plot. “What is the Devil? No, this is not a fantastic character with red horns, but the evil that we accumulate in ourselves ... The worst thing in the modern world is indifference. Dostoevsky wrote that the tears of children are worse than any global catastrophe. However, nowadays we hear about accidents very often: hunger, diseases and natural disasters, murders of thousands of children are everywhere… Do we care about this in 21st century? Not until we can quietly switch TV channels. Think about it, doesn’t it scare you, hence Satan is already possessing us ... ”, Yuri Alexandrov reflects.
