The premiere of “Cavalleria Rusticana”. Press reviews

On October 24 and 25 The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera presented its first premiere of the season, “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni. The production made by Yuri Alexandrov aroused considerable interest in both the audience and the media.

Although the company puts great emphasis on Italian opera, this is the first time that the theatre turns to Pietro Mascagni works. The director Yuri Alexandrov admits that he was fascinated by the subject of the opera: "This is, in fact, a contemporary and urgent topic. It is about a false understanding of freedom, when the man begins to feel free of his obligations to his family, his wife, his children. And, instead of giving the man something, such freedom only destroys him."
The producers staged the show in black and white, making the action very close to the audience and getting the audience involved in the drama. Yuri Alexandrov preferred the classic combination of black, white and scarlet, expecting the spectators to fully recognize all the circumstances and entirely focusing on the music.
The play was highly acclaimed by the critics of Nevsky Teatral, Delovoy Peterburg, North-West Expert and others. The critics have noted the depth of psychological study of the characters, but also praised the soloists’ vocal skills. The nearest premiere performances of “Cavalleria Rusticana” will take place on November 27 and December 13.
