On February 7, 2025, People’s Artist of Russia, outstanding opera director, and artistic director of the “St. Petersburg Opera” theater, Yuri Isaakovich Alexandrov, celebrates a double anniversary—75 years since his birth and 50 years of creative activity.
Yuri Alexandrov’s name has long been synonymous with boldness, innovation, and unwavering devotion to musical theater. His productions captivate audiences, while his theater, “St. Petersburg Opera”, has become a cultural phenomenon, presenting classical works in unexpected ways while preserving their deep traditions and modern relevance.
For a quarter of a century, Yuri Alexandrov worked at the Mariinsky Theater, creating a series of landmark productions that shaped the face of Russian musical theater for years to come. Over five decades, he has directed more than 250 performances in almost all major Russian musical theaters, as well as on the world’s most prestigious opera stages, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Arena di Verona. Thanks to his efforts, rarely performed operas have returned to the Russian stage, many of which are now exclusively staged at “St. Petersburg Opera”.
Yuri Alexandrov is not just a director—he is the founder of a unique school of theatrical thought, merging tradition with innovation. His contribution to Russian art has been recognized with numerous awards and honorary titles, confirming his legendary status in the world of musical theater.
However, his greatest achievement remains the inspiration he gives to colleagues, students, and audiences. He opens new horizons for young artists, directs the International Competition for Young Harpists “Crystal Key”, and the International Festival of Chamber Opera, while creating productions that become global cultural events.
At 75, his journey is far from over—it’s a new peak to conquer. With the same fire in his eyes as when he first stepped onto the opera stage 50 years ago, he continues to lead his theater to new discoveries, premieres, and achievements.
