St. Petersburg Opera presents the premiere of the opera the Tsarina’s Slippers (Cherevichki) by P. Tchaikovsky on 24, 25, 26 December 2021 and on January 6, 7, 2022 directed by People's Artist of Russia, artistic director and founder of the theatre Yuri Alexandrov.
The Tsarina's Slippers is a fairy tale, beloved by many, about a smith Vakula, the beautiful Oksana, the “incomparable” Solokha and other characters in the story

The musical work was created by P. Tchaikovsky in 1885 and became the second edition of the opera Vakula the Smith in 1874, written on libretto by Y. Polonsky.
The opera Vakula the Smith premiered on 24 November (6 December) 1876 at the Mariinsky Theatre. The audience warmly received the new work of the composer, but P.Tchaikovsky wrote the second version of the opera in 1885, and named it The Tsarina's Slippers (in Russian: Cherevichki). It was supplemented with new scenes, as well as the characters became more developed. The premiere took place at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater on January 19 (31), 1887. Cherevichki is one of the few operas by P. Tchaikovsky, where everyday scenes take significant place, and the main characters are ordinary people. The music of the work is saturated with song intonations and rhythms of folk dances, often causing direct associations with one or another example of folk art.
In the play, director Yuri Alexandrov together with the artist Vyacheslav Okunev create a fantastic fairy tale, which combines bright folk color and pomp of imperial Petersburg. In the design of the performance, the motives of the works of Carl Faberge are used, as well as modern technologies: 3D projection and video art.
For the premiere, the St. Petersburg Opera has prepared two special projects: one with the social network VK and the other one with the State Memorial Musical Museum of P. Tchaikovsky.
The audience will be able to have some fun: to try on the augmented reality mask of one of the characters of the opera The Tsarina's Slippers in the VK Clips. VK videos are an endless feed of short vertical videos on a variety of topics, from entertainment to education. The section is located on the fourth tab of the VK mobile app. Clips allow users to embody creative ideas, find audiences and become more popular.
In the theatre’s official VK account, a live broadcast about the history of the opera Cherevichki was organized together with the State Memorial Musical Museum of P. Tchaikovsky.
