Cairo warmly welcomed the opera company from St. Petersburg: Truly summer hot weather and impressive reviews from the local audience

The St. Petersburg Opera performed with the musical drama “Rigoletto” staged by the People's Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov on May 10 and 11, 2021 on the main hall of the Cairo Opera House.

Neither a long flight, nor the heat prevented the opera company to prove its highest professionalism once again – the performances became a significant event in the cultural life of the capital of Egypt. Numerous publications in leading media, warm welcome and the most flattering reviews confirm that art has no boundaries, and the Great Music unites people around the world.

“The play “Rigoletto” performed by the St. Petersburg Opera became the first foreign production brought to Egypt from the beginning of a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection and was met by the Cairo audience with delight. It is such a pleasure that a large-scale event marked the beginning of a series of endeavors within the framework of the Russian-Egyptian Year of Humanitarian Cooperation. Embassy diplomats, our compatriots and representatives of local socio-political circles gladly attended the performance and enjoyed opera singing. We are confident that the tour of the theatre from Russia will put a solid foundation for the further development of the cultural exchange between the two countries,” said Georgiy Borisenko, Russian Ambassador to Egypt.

“Rigoletto” is one of the most famous works of Giuseppe Verdi. The famous opera in the production of Yuri Alexandrov captures attention not only thanks to the luxurious scenography and vocal virtuosity, but also because of unexpected meanings masterfully derived by the director from the score. The production boldly shatters the opera clichés that have developed in the process of staging Rigoletto. According to Yuri Alexandrov, the court jester is not a hunchback at all, but a sarcastic, intelligent, and wicked, but not at all an old man. The hump and the mask are merely the buffoonish guises he wears at the Duke's court. However, moral ugliness cannot be shed like a mask. An extraordinary man, forced to endure constant humiliation, he entertains intrigue, willingly taking part in the amusement of the duke and his entourage.

“We brought one of the most famous operas – “Rigoletto.” This is a large-scale work. This performance demonstrates the capabilities of the troupe of our theatre. We are happy to perform in front of the Egyptian public and we want our friendship to continue and strengthen, appealed to the audience Yuri Alexandrov, People’s Artist of Russia, Artistic director of the St. Petersburg Opera.

The international tour of the St. Petersburg Opera team was held under the auspices of the Government of St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg Committee for Culture, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Russkiy Dom in Cairo, Cultural Bureau of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Moscow, the Cairo Opera House.

The administration of the theatre is grateful to Russian Railways, EgyptAir airlines, Novotel Cairo EL Borg hotel, communication agency Media Waves Egypt.
