Caesar Cui is the creator of the classic children's opera in Russia. His operas Snowy Bogatyr, Little Red Riding Hood, Ivan the Fool and Puss in Boots were very popular at the beginning of the 20th century, although they were not set on the professional stage. After the death of the composer, all these works were forgotten for many years.
The St. Petersburg Opera Theatre was the first in Russia to appeal to the children's musical heritage of the great Russian composer. In December 2017, the tale about the most famous Cat, staged by the People's Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov, returned to the Petersburg stage.
The opera Little Red Riding Hood dedicated to Tsarevich Alexei Romanov, was written in 1911. It has never been staged in professional theatres.
In March 2020, the St. Petersburg Opera hosted the world premiere of the opera Little Red Riding Hood. The performance received modern orchestration and a vivid stage design using video art.
Laconic and tireless, even for the smallest spectators, the performance included, along with vocal numbers, dance scenes performed by theater soloists. The performance enjoys great success among the Petersburg public. It turned out that Cui’s music can inspire not only children, but also adults, therefore, it can be said with confidence that the next creative experiment by Yuri Alexandrov hit the mark.
