September Poster Review
On September 7, the Chamber Music Theatre «St. Petersburg Opera» opens the 32nd season. By tradition, the first performance of the new season will be the opera "Eugene Onegin" by Piotr Tchaikovsky, which is a pinnacle of the Russian opera classics.
The foreign repertoire will take a significant part of all performances in September: from the brilliant opera opuses of the great Italians of the XIX and early XX centuries such as Gaetano Donizetti ("L'elisir d'amore" on September 8), Gioacchino Rossini ("Il Barbiere di Siviglia" on September 12), Giuseppe Verdi ("La Traviata" on September 21), Pietro Mascagni ("Cavalleria rusticana" on September 9), Giacomo Puccini ("Tosca" on September 26), Ruggiero Leoncavallo ("Pagliacci" on September 19) to the masterpieces of the French opera classics (Georges Bizet's "Les pêcheurs de perleson" on September 15 and Charles Gounod's "Faust" on September 14), and the English classics of the XX century ("The Rape of Lucretia" by Benjamin Britten on September 29).
In the repertoire in September there are also several performances from the cycle called "Operetta in the opera house": "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss on September 16 and "La belle Hélène" by Jacques Offenbach on September 23.
On September 28, the theatre will present the premiere of last season "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This performance has become a real gift to the audience who appreciate grace, humor and the ability to bring a good mood to life. The Director of this play and the Artistic Director of the theatre Yuri Alexandrov is generally noted for his ability to turn classical opera performances into vivid and amusing stories that are close to the modern spectator. This time the team is led by the conductor Maxim Valkov showed us the exact singspiel and turned this national German opera onto fashionable in XVIII century Oriental story. At the same time, in this story it is told about the Mozart's fate, or even about the destiny of a musician composing beautiful fairy tales (Olga Strauss, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, May 30, 2018).
On September 9, and September 23, (at 12.00 and 15.00) the theatre will present a play for children. Opera by Caesar Cui "Puss in Boots" staged by Yuri Alexandrov revived interest in almost forgotten operatic compositions written by the composer for children. Yuri Alexandrov states "Cui is a special composer. His musical heritage of course is not comparable to Tchaikovsky or Mussorgsky but it cannot just be erased from history. He created a special creative layer, the soil that fed the geniuses of the era".
