Results of the 31st season
On July 22, the 31st season was concluded with the performance "Eugene Onegin" by Piotr Tchaikovsky. This season for the Chamber Music Theatre «St. Petersburg Opera» was full of events, premieres and tour performances.
This season has become extraordinarly productive for the theater. This is the merit of the whole team and its artistic director, People's Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov.
In the past season three different in style, genre and appealing to different audiences premieres were presented in the theatre. The first premiere of the outgoing season was the staging of the play "October ..17" based on the opera by Vano Muradeli and gathered mainly the student audience. The play was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution and it touched the subject of not political but moral problems, giving new thoughts about the events of a hundred years ago. This production was a cooperation between the St. Petersburg Opera Theatre and the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts. Students of the Institute conducted a poetic line of the play, reading poetries of poets of the Silver Age.
A Christmas gift for young spectators was the production of Caesar Cui's opera «The Puss in Boots». Yury Alexandrov has revived the fairy tale world of this opera on the stage of the Chamber Music Theater. For the creation of a new musical fairy tale "The Puss in Boots" the theatre "St. Petersburg Opera" was awarded an honorary diploma of the festival "Theaters of St. Petersburg for Children". In the second half of the season the premiere of the production of “Die Entführung aus dem Serail" was presented in the theatre as one of the early operas of Mozart. Director of this new play Yuri Alexandrov as always proposed the original version of the composition. It is the key to success of the production of the director who thinks in unconventional way and who brings to his interpretation of classical works the fresh dashes of modern times.
In the past season, the theatre has prepared several new concert programs such as "In The Light Music Genre", "The Grandeur of Russian", "Fateful Passions" and "It Was Recently, It Was Long Ago...".
The concert «Songs of the War Years» was devoted to memorable events of the wartime history of our country as the Victory Day and the complete liberation of Leningrad siege.
The concert "Pearls of Russian Music" was dedicated to the memory of Modest Mussorgsky and one of the performances "Les pêcheurs de perles" to the memory of Georges Bizet.
The theatre took part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and several original concert programs were presented.
In the outgoing season the troupe had many international tours. They were in Lappeenranta (Finland), Warsaw (Poland), Riga (Latvia), as well as the theatre performed within the coutnry in Kaliningrad and Kostomuksha. We took part in the Second Russian Festival of Musical Theaters "Seeing the Music" (Moscow), the Festival "Opera Seasons" (Arkhangelsk), the Russian Festival "The Volga Theater Seasons" (Samara) and the Festival "St. Petersburg Theaters for Children" (St. Petersburg).
The "St. Petersburg Opera" organized the Children Festival where theaters of Petersburg, Moscow and Tallinn performed.
The theatre was awarded prizes and awards. In the past season the theatre was awarded the highest theatre prize of St. Petersburg "Golden Sofit" in four categories:
- "Best Performance in the Opera House" with "Faust" (Directed by Yury Alexandrov)
- "Best male role in an opera performance" where Sergei Aleshchenko was awarded for the role of Faust in the play "Faust"
- "The best work of an artist in a musical theatre" Vyacheslav Okunev for the play "Faust"
- "The best female role in an operetta and a musical" nominee Karolina Shapovalova won the prize for the role of Serpolette in the play «Les Cloches de Corneville”
Yuri Alexandrov and the staff of the theatre won the St. Petersburg Government Prize in Literature, Art and Architecture in the nomination "Theatrical Art" for the performances "October .. 17" and "Faust". The prizes were awarded to:
- Director of the theatre Yuri Alexandrov
- Art director Vyacheslav Okunev
- Conductors Alexander Goichman and Maxim Valkov
- Leading soloists Sofya Nekrasova and Denis Zakirov.
The conductor of the theatre Maxim Valkov, as the producing conductor of the play "Faust" became a laureate of the IV Russian Festival "The Volga Theatre Seasons".
Leonty Salensky became a laureate of the "Youth Prize of St. Petersburg in the field of artistic creativity" in the nomination "For achievements in the field of musical creativity." (2017)
Vladislav Mazankin received the diploma of the festival "Theaters of St. Petersburg for Children" for the role of the Puss in the play "The Puss in Boots" and Sofya Nekrasova became the nominee of the National Opera Award "Onegin".
New season is coming with new premieres and creative discoveries.
