Les cloches de Corneville. The new premiere of the Theatre
On December 23 and 24, The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera will present the first premiere of its anniversary season, Les cloches de Corneville, an operetta by Robert Plunkett.
Written in 1877, it became the composer’s most famous work.
The music of the operetta is characterized by its bright romantic and exquisite melodies. The French composer managed to create charming music for the story, which combines funny jokes with innocent lies and misunderstandings while fiery rhythms and unbridled joy match with touching lyricism.
The modern version of the play has been staged by People's Artist of Russia Yuri Alexandrov, who, over the years has repeatedly turned to the operetta genre. Les cloches de Corneville is a story about a great dream that will surely come true, - the director says. “The last year’s Les pêcheurs de perles by Georges Bizet was just as beautiful. The audience are grateful to us for a chance to have a look at the beauty world, the world of dreams and romance.”
Operettas take significant place in The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera repertoire. The theater offers fans a whole cycle called Operetta in the opera house. A lot of performances of the cycle have been highly acclaimed by both critics and the public. And Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss a recent premiere of the theater, won Golden spotlights, the highest St. Petersburg drama award.
