Театр Санкт-Петербург Опера

Opening the 29th season

Being almost as old as the theatre itself, the performance has become its hallmark, demonstrating its unique features, eccentric directorial approaches and high professional level of the young troupe.

At a press conference on the eve of the new season the theatre artistic director Yuri Alexandrov summed up the previous season and told about his further plans: "29 years ago I was dreaming about creating a new theatre for St. Petersburg. Since then we have released dozens of performances, and many of them have been awarded with prizes.
Last season we for the first time turned to Rossini, staging “Il barbiere di Siviglia”. Trying to take a fresh look at this opera, we shifted emphasis a bit, for the music allows that. Generally, the performance was a success.
The troupe performed in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Tambov, Yaroslavl and participated in international opera festivals in Jekabpils (Latvia) and Kostomuksha with great success.
The new season will feature two premieres: “Cavalleria rusticana” by Mascagni and “Les pêcheurs de perles” by Bizet. “Cavalleria rusticana” is a brutal performance with very austere set design. “Les pêcheurs de perles”, however, is quite different. This performance is going to be bright, oriental and beautiful with richly decorated costumes.
The manager of The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Eugene S. Malygin spoke about the theatre’s plans for participating in festivals in the forthcoming season.
