Evgenii Malygin

Evgenii Malygin was born in Leningrad on August 2, 1975.

In 1998, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Musical College named after Mussorgsky (class of wind and percussion instruments, groups of French horns).

In 2006, Evgenii Malygin graduated from the St. Petersburg State Academy of Performing Arts with a degree in theatre studies, specialization theatricologist-manager.

Evgenii Malygin has been working at the St. Petersburg Opera since 1994. He began his career in the theatre as a senior administrator. In 2002, Evgenii was appointed as assistant to the artistic director and general manager. Evgenii Malygin has been the general manager of the St. Petersburg Opera since 2013.

During his tenure as a general manager, Evgenii Malygin has implemented the following projects:

1. Days of St. Petersburg Culture in Tambov (under auspices of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg).
2. Days of St. Petersburg Culture in Khabarovsk (under auspices of the Committee for External Relations of the Government of St. Petersburg)
   The Days of St. Petersburg in the Khabarovsk Krai were held with the support of the Government of St. Petersburg and the Government of the Khabarovsk Krai. All funds raised from these concerts went to charity – the restoration of the building of the Drama Theatre in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. The implementation of a cultural project of such scale has become a significant event for one of the largest northern regions of Russia and has received glowing reviews from critics and the media.
3. Days of St. Petersburg Culture in Sakha (Yakutia) (under auspices of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg).
4. Days of St. Petersburg Culture in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (under auspices of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg).

Evgenii Malygin during his work took part in the organization of the following events:

1. Donizetti Festival (1998) with the participation of the Government of Italy and the Consulate General of Italy in St. Petersburg.
2. Events dedicated to the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg.
3. International Chamber Opera Festival in St. Petersburg. Held for the first time in 2016 by the St. Petersburg Opera with the support of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg. This festival has become a significant St. Petersburg tradition and was held 4 times with great success. In 2020, it was postponed due to the pandemic to 2021.
4. Festival of Children's Theatres in St. Petersburg, Russia. Held by the St. Petersburg Opera with the support of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg in 2015 and 2017.
5. ‘Silver Ring of Russia’ Choir Festival of the North-Western Region in St. Petersburg. Held by the St. Petersburg Opera with the support of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg in 2015.
6. Gala reception hosted by the Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko at the Tauride Palace in 2016.

In 2017, the St. Petersburg Opera under the direction of Evgenii Malygin was awarded the Honorary Diploma of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg ‘For a Significant Contribution to the Development of Culture and Art in St. Petersburg, as well as in Connection with the 30th Anniversary of the Theatre.’

Evgenii Malygin has created social children's projects: ‘The Crystal Sound of the Magic Harp’ and ‘The Musical Alphabet of St. Petersburg’. The projects are intended for children from large and sole-parent families and, first of all, for children with special needs.

The cultural and educational program ‘The Musical Alphabet of St. Petersburg’ includes thematic concerts as: ‘To a musical theater with the whole family’, ‘Academy of a young theater-enthusiast’, ‘Say “A…”’ (musical dictionary), ‘Whose voice is better?’ (what is soprano and baritone), ‘How old is the opera?’ (small opera stories), ‘And finally we are in a real opera!’, and other.

At lectures and concerts, participants of the social program are introduced to different aspects of musical theatre, classical and modern music. An interactive cultural and educational program was developed by the authors taking into account the age characteristics of the audience, and is aimed at inmates of orphan asylums and boarding schools. It includes interactive lectures on the basic concepts of musical theatres, brief excursion of the musical theatre, theatrical opera concert performances with the participation of soloists, accompanists and the orchestra.

The above projects for children are not commercial and are aimed at promoting the St. Petersburg musical culture in remote regions of Russia within the framework of the federal target program ‘Culture of Russia (2012–2016)’.

Over the years of work in the theatre, Evgenii Malygin was awarded state prizes and awards:

1. Recognition letter from the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in St. Petersburg ‘For Assistance in the Preparation and Holding of the Days of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in St. Petersburg on December 5–7, 2007 Dedicated to the 375th Anniversary of the Entry of Yakutia into the Russian State and the Founding of the city of Yakutsk’, 2007.
2. Gratitude of the Vice-governor of St. Petersburg ‘For Many Years and Conscientious Work; Great Personal Contribution to the Development of Culture and Art of St. Petersburg and in Connection with the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chamber Musical Theatre “St. Petersburg Opera”, 2008.
3. Diploma of the Committee for Culture of the Government of St. Petersburg ‘For many Years of Conscientious Work, Great Contribution to the Development of Musical Art and in Connection with the 25th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chamber Musical Theatre “St. Petersburg Opera”, 2012.
4. Gratitude of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg ‘For Outstanding Personal Services in the Development of Culture and Art in St. Petersburg, High Professionalism, Many Years of Conscientious Work, as well as in Connection with the 30th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chamber Musical Theatre “St. Petersburg Opera”, 2017.
5. Gratitude of the Governor of St. Petersburg ‘For Many Years of Conscientious Work, Great Contribution to the Development of the Culture of St. Petersburg and in Connection with the 45th Anniversary of the Birth’, 2020.

The creative contribution of Evgenii Malygin to the culture of St. Petersburg and Russia is complemented by his merits associated with the revival of an almost completely destroyed historical building in the center of St. Petersburg, the mansion of Baron von Derviz – nowadays the venue of the St. Petersburg Opera. After the 1917 revolution, the luxurious interiors of the mansion were given over to various Soviet institutions. By 1998, when the building was handed over to the theatre, the mansion was dilapidated with rotten floors and broken windows. In the period from 2008 to 2019, on the initiative of Evgenii Malygin, both the theatrical interiors and the rooms of the von Derviz mansion were restored, which made it possible to give a complete look to the suite of unique interiors of the palace. Today, Evgenii Malygin managed to completely ‘return from oblivion’ one of the most beautiful theaters – the pearl of European Art Nouveau.
